“THE TRAIL” Not just another walk in the woods

This might be a good time to inform blog readers of my forthcoming debut novel, The Trail. The book, a thriller, will be released by Turner Publishing next month.

The Trail has been a seven year writing project. The easiest part was my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2003. Three years later I began writing the novel and finished the first draft in 2007. It took two years of rewrites to finally get an agent. Then more rewrites (including a complete change to a younger protagonist) and the manuscript was sold last year.

Essentially, I’ve placed a fugitive wanted for murder in North Carolina on the A.T. He’s nasty and likes women way too much. I’ll stop at that. In the novel’s afterword, I explain that I had a wonderful thru-hike experience and did not meet any problem characters. Although the plot in The Trail is imagined, eleven murders have occurred on or near the A.T. It’s always wise to stay alert in the wilds.

I’ve dedicated my novel to the Thru-Hiker. It’s not just another walk in the woods.

Until next time, happy trails!

  1. Hi Ray,

Did you happen to see “The Mind of the Hiker” published in The Boston Globe Magazine this past Sunday? The A T is getting publicity!
