Mt. Greylock in the Berkshires: A pleasant hike on the Appalachian Trail.

A.T. to Mt. Greylock

Mt. Greylock, in the heart of the Berkshires, is the highest spot in Massachusetts. At 3,491 feet, it is the focal point in the range of low mountains in the western part of the state. Mt. Greylock  Reservation, covering 12,000 acres, has extensive trails and is a great place to hike and camp.

Last week, my wife and I hiked to the top of Mt. Greylock and enjoyed lunch in the Bascom Lodge cafeteria on the summit. This lodge, well-known to thru-hikers of the Appalachian Trail, has a large sunroom with pleasant views. Outside, there is a  memorial tower honoring Massachusetts war veterans . If you are ambitious, you can climb the many stairs inside and see a panorama of exquisite views from the top. That’s where this picture of the lodge was taken.
