Mt. Monadnock: The most frequently hiked mountain in America.

Hiking up New Hampshire's Mt. Monadnock
AMC hiking group--Mt. Monadnock
Mt. Monadnock, in New Hampshire, is the most frequently hiked mountain in America.

This past Saturday, I climbed the popular mountain with fellow hikers of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). It was a gorgeous day, and the parking lot was full just like the last time I’d hiked Monadnock thirty years ago.

Our hike leader selected the less traveled Pumbelly Trail for the ascent. We met only two hikers on the way up, but gradually more as trails converged near the top, and on the spread-out rocky summit, about fifty hikers collected. We ate our lunches and rested under a warm sun.

It’s easy to understand why Mt. Monadnock is so popular. It’s a busy and rocky climb, but not difficult. Children ran from rock to rock on the peak, a teenager flew a kite, everyone snapped pictures of scenic views.

As we began our descent, I looked upon two young lovers sharing a private rock. May all their dreams come true.

  1. I like the picture of the summit. I’ve always liked the name “Mt. Monadnock” and one of these days I’ll have to climb it.
